MASECTOMIES

April 2021 - Arctec, Meshmixer, Cura - In collaboration with Gravida

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

To create these statues I talked to women all over the Netherlands.

The overwhelmingly positive responses and registrations showed me how connected these women are. But also that they are proud of their bodies and very brave.

In the end I made 3D scans of 3 women. The statues are printed in 3D and are made of bronze.

The images have a white gloss coating, to give it a kind of porcelain look.

Porcelain is a fragile material and I found that a good comparison with the human body, which can also feel very fragile in times of illness.

It also reminded me of the images of Greek classical antiquity. One of the purposes of these statues was to sculpt a divine human or human God. "The Ideal Body".

With this I want to say that the perfect body can look in many different ways and thus give a '' modern '' twist to those thoughts and way of sculpting.

Each woman has been given a dot/circle.

This represents perfection. These women are just as whole as before the breast (s) amputation.

The colors also have a meaning:

For example, gold stands for strength, positivity and victory.

Pink symbolises femininity and vulnerability.

Black for strength, sense of reality, struggle and perseverance.

That's what the images radiate to me and the idea I had in mind while creating these. Although of course it remains art and everyone can and may interpret it in their own way.

The bronze statues rest on a granite, polished pedestal. I had this made to measure. Not only are the statues a lot firmer, but they are now also really elevated.

Making these statues has no commercial approach. I do not work for a company that offers these images / scans and therefore do not get any financial profit from this project.

Would you like to have a similar statue made of yourself? Then you can contact Gravida.

For me it is about being able to express myself creatively in a meaningful way. But I also like to give these women a stage and I want to bring out the strength and femininity that they radiate.
